Our private rented sector team receives over 60 complaints a month concerning conditions in privately rented properties. Where landlords are found to not be managing their flats properly or carrying out suitable repairs, the team can take enforcement action including the service of improvement notices, issuing financial penalty notices, or prosecuting in the magistrates’ court.
Mr Kimpiatu, a private tenant, was renting a property which was in severe disrepair and unlicensed. Following an inspection from the Council, formal action was taken against the landlord and Mr Kimpiatu was assisted in getting rehoused.
“The Council came and visited my flat. They saw the condition of the house and made me understand I couldn’t stay here. They took action against my landlord and helped me find a new place. I feel so much happier now.” Watch Mr Kimpiatu’s story and find out about his experience and the support he received.
