We were pleased to see so much interest in the recent Camden Private Renters' Week where we had a host of experts and services giving advice and support to anyone renting from a private landlord. The online webinars and the Saturday fair at the Crowndale Centre were well attended and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Empty Homes Week (9-15 March)

Empty homes can often cause problems for local communities. As well as sometimes being eyesores, they can often attract squatters, vandals, and other criminal activity. In addition, the condition of empty properties can deteriorate rapidly, often leading to problems in neighbouring properties too.

CO Awareness Week

Last week was carbon monoxide awareness week which aimed to save lives by making people more aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) as well as what to do if you suspect CO. The week also supported the 'pack safe' appeal which highlighted the importance of knowing about CO when travelling.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a dangerous gas that is undetectable by human senses. It is often referred to as the 'silent killer' and is produced when fossil fuels burn inefficiently. The most common sources are faulty boilers, gas fires and cookers.

Each year, in the UK, over 200 people are hospitalised with suspected CO poisoning, which leads to around 60 deaths. It is therefore important to have a CO alarm wherever there is a combustible appliance.

The Council want local people to play a role in shaping the future of housing in the borough, particularly young people (aged 18 to 24), private renters and social housing tenants (including Housing Association and Council tenants).

To do this we’re organising a series of focus groups in libraries in Camden in December.

The findings from these focus groups will help the Camden Housing Taskforce (a new expert advisory group set up by the Council) make recommendations for how the council should provide new homes.

This is to let you know the Camden Community Support Bus service will be operating across Camden in December, offering blood pressure checks and a diabetes risk assessment to anyone aged 30-70yrs:

The Health Bus will be inside Highgate Newtown Community Centre, 30 Bertram Street, N19 5DQ (indoors), on Friday 5th December
The Health Bus will be at St Pancras Community Centre, 67 Plender Street NW1 0LB, on Friday 12th December
The Health Bus will be inside Bourne Estate - Allen Hall, Bourne Estate TRA Hall, Portpool Lane, EC1N 7AA (indoors) on Friday 19th December

This is a free, walk-in service with no appointment necessary.

E-bikes and e-scooters becoming one of the capital’s fastest-growing fire risks

Urgent warning after London homes gutted.

E-bike batteries purchased online might not necessarily adhere to UK safety regulations are more likely to fail and cause a fire. Buying batteries second hand means you may be buying a battery that is already damaged and a fire risk.

DIY installations can also lead to damage of the kit, increasing the chances of battery failure and the likelihood of a fire. 

The London Fire Brigade advises people to buy from a reputable seller and to not buy second hand.

They also advise that people do not attempt to modify or tamper with the battery, motor or charger, and to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Always charge the battery with the correct charger.

If you plan to convert your bicycle to an e-bike, get a professional to carry out the conversion.

More Camden Private Renters advice surgeries announced

The dates of the next advice surgeries, aimed specifically at people renting privately, have been confirmed. After the first one on 18 February at Camden Town Hall, there will be one on 6 March at Highgate Road Chapel. The one after that is the 12 March at Kentish Town Library. All surgeries are 6-8pm. A series of evening surgeries are being held around Camden in February and March. The first one is on Tuesday 18 February, 6-8pm at Camden Town Hall (Claudia Jones Room), Judd Street, WC1H 9JE. All private renters are welcome. No need to RSVP - just turn up on the evening.

There will also be a chance to speak to your local councillors in King’s Cross, Holborn & Covent Garden, Bloomsbury wards.

Council staff will be on hand to provide information and advice with:

energy efficiency
community safety
disrepair – damp and mould etc.
HMO licensing
harassment/illegal evictions
managing agents, fees, deposits
registering with a GP
advice on the new Renters’ Rights legislation

Help shape the future of HMO licensing in Camden

Residents, landlords and service providers are invited to have their say on Camden’s licensing scheme for Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs).

HMOs are shared homes, including house and flat shares, student homes, bedsits, and some buildings converted into flats.

In Camden, landlords are required to have an additional licence if they own or manage a HMO. This licence ensures the property is well-maintained and safe for everyone living there.

Launched in 2015, the scheme is reviewed every five years. A consultation is now open for residents, tenants, landlords, agents, businesses and service providers in Camden and the surrounding areas to share their views and help shape the future of HMO licensing in the borough.

The consultation will close at midnight on Tuesday 8 April 2025. Find out more about HMO licensing and share your views by visiting camden.gov.uk/hmo-consultation.

We held our autumn private renters forum on Wednesday 29 November.

This forum provided expert advice on living in a house in multiple occupation (HMO), claiming back rent (for example if you live in an unlicensed HMO), and how trading standards regulate letting agents, tenant fees and unfair practices. We also explained what the Council can do to help.

E-bike fire safety warning

Trading Standards advice to anyone purchasing an e-bike, e-scooter or spare batteries and chargers:

• only purchase e-bikes, e-scooters, chargers and batteries from trusted retailers
• never buy fake batteries or chargers, and ensure that any device you use displays a valid UKCA or CE mark
• check that separate components, such as batteries and chargers, are compatible with one another
• register your product with the manufacturer to validate any warranties on components including batteries, registering makes it easier for manufacturers to contact you in the event of safety or recall information
• check any products you have bought are not subject to a product recall, you can do this by checking Electrical Safety First’s website or the government website
• follow London Fire Brigade advice on charging the scooter safely, last year they attended over 116 fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters
